They've Found Me
I step outside, It's just starting to rain. But it's not one of those humid, suffocating thunderstorms that make you want to close the windows and barricade the doors for fear of a hurricane. No, It was cold. And it had that feel to it, the ozone layer crackling, ready to strike with it's amazing power. It was a lightning storm. It's already quite dark outside. Just a few minutes before, the sun had been shining brightly. But now, clouds have quickly blotted out any light trying to seep through.
I give myself a quick once over before walking to my backyard, where I often spend much of my time. I have my notebook, in case I get struck with inspiration (Inspiration usually comes when I least expect it, so I have learned to always be prepared. I have my flashlight, because although I can still see enough to write, (barely) it gave me a sense of security. My blanket is tucked under my arm, I despise sitting on the ground, ants and grass covering my legs as I try to find a comfortable position. I also brought my camera, though I'm not sure why. I just had this feeling, something strange was about to happen, and I wanted to capture the moment while it was running its course. I step down the stone stairway by my garden. I should probably tend to my garden soon before the weeds take over and I'm left with a weed fest to take care of. I jump off the final step, and land on the ground. As my feet touch the mixture of grass and stone that make up my families rather secluded driveway, lightning flashes. It was so sudden and bright, I have to bite back a sudden, gasp. I quickly cross the garage doors, I am now in my backyard. I turn on my camera, fixing the settings to adjust to the lighting. I leave it hanging around my neck like a necklace as I take the blanket out, and lay it on the grass.
I sit down, and close my eyes. The cold wind is blowing my hair back and leaving me refreshed, though slightly cold. Lightning flashes again, illuminating the entire backyard. This time, a screech escapes my lips before I can stop it. There is a girl. standing not five feet away, and I'm absolutely positive she wasn't there before. She blinks her eyes, and looks at me. She has the most beautiful eyes I've ever seen. They're electric blue, I can almost feel the lightning strike me as she looks point blanc - at me.
"Hello?" I say, uncertain of how to act. She had the most beautiful black hair that fell well beyond her shoulders. she looked to be about eighteen.
"They've found me." she says. Her voice is as beautiful as her eyes. "They've found me." she repeats.
"Um, okay, who? Who's found you? And what's your name?" Maybe she's a new neighbor... funny, you'd think I would have noticed the moving vans.
"I'm Electra." she says. She seems to be in a daze, I'm not even sure if she knows that I'm really here, she seems to be in a dream.
"Do you need some help? my parents are inside, I can..."
"No!" she exclaims, backing away from me.
"No!" she exclaims, backing away from me.
"Okay," I say, standing to my feet. "It's alright, I'm Reyna, you're safe here. Whoever's found you, they probably aren't dangerous." I take a few steps closer, and her eyes come into focus.
"Dangerous? You have no idea. They are Thanasimos dolofonos."
"What?" I say. Maybe she's from a foreign country, an illegal alien.
"Deadly Killers."
"Oh, um," Yah. Just making a wild guessing but i'm thinking she's probably hit her head a little too hard. "should I take you somewhere safe then, or..?"
"Safe..." she drifts back into her sleepy state. "I will never be safe again." Lightning flashes, and my heart skips a beat. She's gone, just like that. She has disappeared as suddenly as she appeared. I stand shakily to my feet, and walk slowly back to the front of the house. It has finally started to rain, and I'm afraid to get my camera wet. Then I realize, It's still on. I go to turn it off, but a sudden urge cause me to hit play and view the pictures I've taken the past couple of weeks. And then I see it. It's a picture. Blurry and barely visible, but it's a picture. Of her. The flash of lightning must have set off the automatic capture mode.
After some editing, I am able to focus it better. Now, it looks almost like a photo of a person, instead of the blur of light like it was before.. Her face is turned in the cameras direction, and although it was only black and white because of how dark it was outside, It's there, I have proof. I'm not crazy, she was really there.
I still shake at the memory of her stare. The hurt and fear in her eyes. "They've found me." She'd said. "They've found me."
